Summer 2014 anime preview: Space Dandy 2

Space DandyPicking up right where it left off last winter, Space Dandy is back with another round of hit-and-miss episodic humour.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that the show is directed by Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo fame. There’s no significant over-arching storyline tying Space Dandy’s episodes together. Sure, Dandy is a lazy bum of an alien hunter and that premise serves as the jumping off point for this episode just like in the 13 that aired previously, but this show is much more akin to a weekly sketch comedy routine rather than a series of character vignettes leading towards an emotional grand finale.

That said, Space Dandy knows what it is, and when its jokes hit, they hit hard — and even when they miss, it’s still fun to watch the crazy animation that the folks at Bones were able to let loose on.

It’s tough to get tired of gags that aren’t recycled each episode and with Space Dandy’s penchant for the random, you’re likely to get something out of the show’s brand of humour even if you aren’t cackling for 24 consecutive minutes each week.

Rating: 3/5

Space Dandy is currently streaming on Funimation.
