If you’re unfamiliar with the world of boys-love shows, Love Stage!! might be a great entry point to consider.
Izumi is the standout otaku in his family of extremely talented entertainers. Other than one time as an effeminate child when he filled in as a flower girl for a missing actress at a wedding commercial shoot, he’s never done well on a stage or in front of a camera. Now as an effeminate college student, he’s suckered into reprising his role in an anniversary edition of the commercial by his family, and it looks like his co-star hasn’t forgotten for a moment the cute “girl” he acted with 10 years prior.
Love Stage!!’s first episode is well paced and genuinely funny even when some of its jokes feel like they’ve been telegraphed minutes ahead of time. Izumi’s bashfulness compared to the confidence of everyone around him makes for some great exchanges. Its this humour that makes the first episode so approachable, but it’s the great cliffhanger that will make you want to stick around for at least another episode.
Since they’re playing bride and groom, Izumi winds up sharing a kiss with his co-star, Ryuuma (a famous actor), who’s still oblivious to Izumi’s gender. Wondering how long the misunderstanding can last as well as how Ryuuma will react once the truth comes out is enough of a draw for the first act of Love Stage!!, and with what looks like a strong supporting cast to back thinks up, whatever direction future acts take should be entertaining as well.
