I’ve never seen a bad senior graduation recital out of MacEwan University’s music program, but none has ever hit me quite like Leah Harman’s.

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Department (ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka) doesn’t quite put the pedal to the metal of the plot-mobile this week, but boy does it ever remind us how smooth its transmission is, helmed by Jean.

This week’s Demi-chan wa Kataritai (Interviews with Monster Girls) takes a contemplative walk through the relationships of its characters, evaluating whether their actions resulted in the best emotional outcome. Though, you might not guess as much from the first moments of the episode.

This week on Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon), we get an ensemble episode in the truest sense of the term. The rendition of The Little Matchstick Girl that the cast puts on is as spectacularly peculiar as their fantasy natures.

In a second consecutive slow-paced episode, ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Department (ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka) delivers its reveals with little gusto, amid unneeded distractions, and by dodging some of the biggest questions.

This week’s Demi-chan wa Kataritai (Interviews with Monster Girls) is a welcome return to the more contemplative form that the show displayed before its recent slog.

Here’s my first big local break. I wrote the cover story for Vue Weekly this week about a sculpture exhibition by prairie-bred artist Jude Griebel.
After installing exhibitions around the world, Jude Griebel returns to Edmonton this week for his first solo exhibit at the dc3 Art Projects gallery.
With seven-foot resin figures and bone sculptures the size of a human head, the Alberta-bred artist’s 12-sculpture installation, Crafting Ruin, tackles modern environmental issues like consumption and wastefulness. Read more
His exhibition opens today at dc3 Art Projects, and it’s filled with provocative figures that make us think about our place in the environment. I had a lot of fun writing this preview, and I’m glad I could share some of Griebel’s perspective with a wider audience.

Here’s a preview I wrote for Vue Weekly about an exciting looking play called Soliciting Temptation opening at the Varscona Theatre tonight.
Soliciting Temptation tackles the social complexities of sex tourism from the inside of one nondescript hotel room set in an exotic country. And that hotel room shuttled from Calgary to Edmonton this week for a new crowd to see. Read more
The Jason Mehmel-directed play is coproduced by Calgary’s Sage Theatre and Edmonton’s Shadow Theatre, starring Patricia Cerra and Mattie Overall. The 90-minute, two-person performance opens at 7:30pm tonight and runs until Mar. 26.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon) takes top score in an episode about a sports festival, which is not something you’d expect from the track record of the episode trope.

In a departure from the mortar-sealed narrative construction we’re used to getting, this week’s ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Department (ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka) slows its plot to a sluggish pace. Catching revelations still squeeze out of the text, but the animation doesn’t look particularly good while it happens.
